Chapter Nine
Duke Archibald Windley
Two things were bothering him â and only one was the dead body. The other was the fact that Melinda, apparently the worst witch in all of the city, had defeated the shadow assassin on her own. As he hauled the body toward the door, he glanced around the room. There wasnât that much damage. Which meant that sheâd had an efficient fight. She walked fine, too. She winced a little as she palpated her arm, but that appeared to be her only injury, and it was a bruise, if he was any judge.
Sheâd defeated a shadow assassin that had successfully knocked him out in a few seconds. And sheâd done so quietly and efficiently.
Yes, she was strong. And yes, she was agile and clearly knew how to fight. But shadow assassins didnât care about your body â just your magic.
He assessed her from behind. She warily stared over her shoulder at him as they reached the door. âNobodyâs around. How are weââ
âIf youâre about to ask me what the plan is, please spare me. Iâve already concluded there is no plan. How exactly am I to carry a dead body out of one of the most prestigious hotels in the city?â He looked at her pointedly, but he didnât expect nor need a response. âWeâll just have to figure it out. Now forge ahead. But, Melindaââ
She turned from him quickly, opened the door, and raced out. âYes, Iâll be careful.â
âI very much doubt that,â he muttered as he let his gaze flash up and down her body once more.
There was no other sign of injury, and trust him, he wouldâve found one if it were there. Heâd done a stint in a field hospital once. All injuries, no matter how stalwart the person who had them, hampered their victim.
What did he know about this woman so far? Aside from her razor-sharp wit, he knew that she had calculated, to the exact second, how to get through town. She also knew how to use her body, and she could take down assassins ordinary King witches would have trouble handling.
He was starting to get a certain feeling in his stomach. Though that was a lie. The exact wild pitch of his intuition had been there from the moment heâd laid eyes on her. He just hadnât heeded it until now. And now, as he glanced down at his ring and moved it around with a twiddle of his thumb, he realized it was far too late to regret this.
Melinda was light on her feet. She kept darting her head from left to right. She threw out an arm, forcing him to pause. He hadnât heard anything until, a second later, there was a low murmur from the door to the side. She bit her lip, hesitated, then pushed him on with a flick of her hand.
He had the sudden thought that if heâd had good soldiers like her on the front line of the only battle heâd ever fought, he mightâve won.
